Mechanism of action

Fluoride varnish functions by increasing the fluoride concentration on the outer surface of teeth, thereby enhancing fluoride uptake during the early stages of demineralization. Upon contact with saliva, the varnish forms a hardened layer on the tooth surface. This allows the high fluoride concentration to remain in contact with the tooth enamel for an extended period, ranging from one to seven days. This duration of exposure is considerably longer compared to other high-strength sodium fluoride products, which typically remain active for 10 to 15 minutes. The fluoride deposited on the tooth surface is notably higher in demineralized areas compared to sound tooth surfaces. As a result, the benefits of fluoride varnish are more pronounced for patients at high or moderate risks for caries or demineralization.

5% (22,600 ppm F)
Neutral Sodium Fluoride

Remineralizes against caries

Fluoride ions bind with the calcium and phosphate ions to form fluoroapatite to produce a surface more resistant to acid dissolution.

  1. Open varnish from the same end as the bristles.
  2. Thoroughly mix varnish with the brush for approximately 20 seconds or until completely uniform.
  3. Paint a thin even layer to the areas being treated. Do not saturate the brush with the varnish to avoid dripping.
  4. Advise the patient that the application must not be removed for at least 3 to 6 hours but preferably overnight. The patient should avoid brushing and flossing, hot liquids and alcohol, and eat a soft food diet.
