Mechanism of action

Calcium ions attract to receptor sites on the tooth surface, where they combine with fluoride ions to form calcium fluoride. This compound becomes incorporated into the hydroxyapatite, which constitutes 97% of enamel and 70% of dentin, making the tooth more resistant to acid dissolution.

1.1% (5,000 ppm F)
Sodium Fluoride

Remineralizes against caries

Fluoride ions bind with the calcium and phosphate ions to form fluoroapatite to produce a surface more resistant to acid dissolution.

10% Xylitol

Reduces cariogenic bacteria load

Cariogenic microorganisms cannot metabolize xylitol, which results in their inability to produce lactic acid or polysaccharide which causes caries.

Scientific evidence

  • Toothpastes with 5,000 ppm of fluoride induced remineralization and inhibited demineralization more effectively than those with 1,450 ppm of fluoride.
  • The longer a fluoride treatment lasts, the more protected the enamel is from attrition or erosion.
  • A toothpaste composed of 500 ppm of fluoride and 5% xylitol improves the remineralization of early cariogenic lesions.
  • The percent inhibition of S. mutans glycolysis of fluoride and xylitol when combined was greater than fluoride alone.
  • The use of fluoride and xylitol may slow down the metabolism of glucose by S. mutans.
  • Significant reduction in root cavities in just 3 months (32.8%) and 6 months (59.6%).
